Inburgering Reading exam (Lezen): example questions with answers

The *Lezen* part of the exam asks you to read short Dutch texts and choose the best answer. On this page, you’ll see inburgering reading practice questions in a DUO-style format, with the correct answer and a short reason. You’ll also see what this section tests and how to practise in a way that feels close to the real exam.

What the Lezen (Reading) section tests

The Lezen exam is done on the computer at a DUO exam centre. You read short Dutch texts and answer multiple-choice questions. The exam lasts 65 minutes.

At A2 level, the texts are about daily life. You may read a letter from a gemeente (municipality), an e-mail from work, a note from a neighbour, a shop advert, a transport notice, or a short brochure. The questions usually test one clear reading skill at a time.

These are the main things you need to do:

  • find one specific fact, such as a day, time, price, or place
  • understand the purpose of a message
  • see what a person must do next
  • make a simple conclusion from the text

A common DUO pattern is a short setup with a person’s name before the question. You read about that person, then answer from their situation.

Why these answers are correct

The right answer in this section is often a small detail, but the wrong answers also come from the text. That is why the exam can feel harder than the language level.

In Example 1, the wrong options use real words from the letter, such as kamer 3 and werkpas. But the question asks what Sabrina must do if she cannot come. Only one sentence answers that.

In Example 2, the trap is the bus times. You may see 08.40 and choose it fast. But the question is about Saturday, and on Saturday line 12 does not run.

In Example 3, you need a simple conclusion. The text does not say, "Amir must choose another date," but it does say the practice is only open for emergencies and normal appointments must be moved online.

In Example 4, the key is the purpose of the message. Small details like 14.00, 16.00, and 15.30 are there, but the real point is Youssef’s request.

In Example 5, the answer is a place. The text gives other facts too, like June, 25 euro, and Monday and Thursday. Those facts are there to distract you if you do not read the question carefully.

Common mistakes on this section

One common mistake is reading the text first and the question later. On this exam, it helps to read the question first, because then you know what fact to scan for.

Another mistake is choosing an option just because the same word appears in the text. DUO-style wrong answers often copy a true detail, but it answers a different question.

Many learners also miss the person in the setup line. If the question says Halima or Sabrina, stay inside that person’s situation. The answer must fit that person, not just the text in general.

A final mistake is not guessing. This section is multiple choice only, and there is no deduction for wrong answers. If you are unsure, choose the best option and move on.

How to practise further

To get better at Lezen, practise with short Dutch texts from everyday life. Focus on letters, e-mails, notes, adverts, opening times, schedules, and short messages. That matches the kinds of texts DUO uses.

When you practise, use a simple routine. Read the question first. Underline one target: time, date, action, purpose, or place. Then scan the text for that exact information.

It also helps to train with worked examples like the ones above. When you check the answer, don’t stop at right or wrong. Ask why the other options are wrong. That is how you get faster.

If you want more practice, the InburgeringPrep app gives you more A2-style reading questions with Dutch texts, answer checks, and repeat practice. You can build speed, learn DUO answer traps, and make the exam feel more familiar before test day.

Frequently asked questions
Are the Lezen questions open questions or multiple choice?
The A2 *Lezen* exam uses multiple-choice questions only. You read a short Dutch text on the computer and choose one answer option.
What kinds of texts appear in the Lezen exam?
The texts are short and practical. You can get letters, e-mails, notes, adverts, schedules, brochures, and other everyday texts about work, school, health, transport, shopping, or local services.
How should I approach each reading question?
Read the question first, then scan the text for the exact detail or main purpose. This helps because many wrong options use real facts from the text but answer a different question.
Can I use a dictionary in the A2 Lezen exam?
No. At A2, there is no dictionary in the exam. That is why it helps to practise short everyday texts and get used to finding meaning from context.
How can I improve faster for the reading section?
Practise often with short Dutch texts and check why each answer is right or wrong. Repeating DUO-style questions helps you get faster at finding details, understanding message purpose, and avoiding trap answers.
