The Speaking exam: what do you see on the screen?Speaking A2

The DUO Spreken exam was overhauled on 1 March 2025. The old multiple-choice part is gone — you will not see any wat zeg je? a/b/c options on the screen.

Wat zie je op het scherm

Every task shows a picture or a short video. You hear a question through the headset and record your answer into the microphone. There is no human interviewer. Just you, the screen, and roughly 60 seconds per answer.

Vier delen, vier taken

Almost every prompt has two parts. The audio asks the main question, then adds an instruction like Vertel ook waarom (Tell me also why). Answer only the first half and you drop roughly half the points on that item.

Your Dutch does not have to be perfect. It has to answer both halves of the prompt.

Key takeaway· 1 of 3
The two-part question trap

Almost every question contains a follow-up instruction. It means you must give a reason or extra detail. The easiest way to score points is to listen for this phrase and answer it using simple connectors like want or omdat.

Vertel ook waarom.Tell me also why.
Vertel ook wanneer.Tell me also when.
Choosing a preference in Section 3

In the section with two images, you must pick one and justify it. Focus on the word liever.

Wat doet u liever? What do you prefer?
Welke jas koopt u liever?Which jacket do you prefer to buy?
Pacing yourself on the three-picture task

In Section 4, you see three pictures. You must manage your time so you mention all three before the time runs out.

Vertel iets over alle plaatjes.Tell something about all pictures.
Vertel wat Jamal doet.Tell what Jamal does.
