The Writing Exam: What to Expect on PaperWriting A2

The A2 Schrijven exam is a pen-and-paper test. You will receive a booklet with four specific writing tasks: a form (formulier), a short note (briefje), an email (e-mail), and a short free text (vrije tekst). Because human examiners grade your paper, you must follow the printed instructions exactly.

Schrijf in hele zinnen

The most important rule to remember is Schrijf in hele zinnen (Write in complete sentences). If a question asks why you want to learn Dutch, answering 'Voor mijn werk' will score zero points. You must write the full sentence: 'Ik leer Nederlands voor mijn werk.'

Cover every bullet point

The examiners use a strict rubric. The very first thing they check is your content. If a writing prompt gives you three bullet points to answer, you MUST write about all three. If you write perfect Dutch but miss one bullet point, your score for that task immediately drops. Always read the bold text above the lines carefully.

Key takeaway· 1 of 3
Always write complete sentences

Unless you are filling in your name or phone number on a form, every answer must contain a subject and a conjugated verb. Single words or bullet-point lists score zero points.

Ik ben ziek, dus ik kom niet.I am sick, so I am not coming. (Good)
Ziek. Kom niet.Sick. Not coming. (Bad - zero points)
Check the required sentence count

Look for instructions telling you exactly how much to write. If you write two sentences when three are requested, you will lose points.

Schrijf minimaal drie zinnen.Write at least three sentences.
Cover all the bullet points

Exam prompts usually list two or three things you must include. If you miss one, your score drops immediately, even if your grammar is perfect.

Schrijf aan je docent: waarom je niet komt en wanneer je weer komt.Write to your teacher: why you are not coming and when you will return.
