Register: Choosing 'u' or 'je' and the Proper GreetingWriting A2

A missing greeting or closing immediately drops your score on a Dutch email or letter.

Before you write a single word, identify your recipient to pick the right register. Are you writing to the gemeente, a huisarts (doctor), or a school? Use the formal register (u). Are you writing to a vriend, a buurman, or a direct colleague? Use the informal register (je).

Consistency wins. If you start formal, stay formal. If you begin a formal letter, you must use u and uw for the entire text. Never switch to je or jouw halfway through! Mixed register is a very common mistake that will severely impact your result.

Key takeaway· 1 of 3
The Formal Register

Use these when writing to someone you do not know well, a manager, or a formal institution like the gemeente. Always use the pronoun 'u' and the possessive 'uw'.

Beste meneer De Vries,Dear Mr. De Vries,

The Informal Register

Use these for people close to you, neighbors, and direct colleagues. Use the pronoun 'je' (or 'jij') and the possessive 'jouw'.

Hoi Anna,Hi Anna,
Groetjes,Greetings,
The Consistency Rule

Never mix formal and informal words in the same text. If you start with a formal greeting, every pronoun must be formal.

Geachte meneer, kunt u mij bellen?Dear sir, can you (formal) call me? (Correct)
Geachte meneer, kan je mij bellen?Dear sir, can you (informal) call me? (Incorrect - mixed register)
