Common questions
What is the Dutch story game?
An illustrated branching story written in simple A2-level Dutch. You read a scene, pick what you say or do next, and the story carries on from your choice, like a choose-your-own-adventure book, in Dutch, with a picture for every scene.
How long is a story?
That is up to you. There are 6 short scenes of four or five screens for a spare five minutes, 15 medium stories of seven or eight screens covering a whole errand or appointment, and 4 long ones that run ten to fourteen screens across several acts: a moving day, a first day at work, falling ill, Koningsdag.
Do I need to know a lot of Dutch already?
No. Every story uses everyday A2 vocabulary and short sentences. Each one has a 'Show words in this story' list with English translations for the key words, so you can look things up without leaving the page.
Do my choices actually change anything?
Yes. Every story has several different endings (142 across the whole game), and being vague, rude or too quiet early on changes how people talk to you later. Some endings are neither a triumph nor a disaster, which is usually how these situations really go.
How does a text game help me learn Dutch?
Reading a real scene (buying bread, seeing a doctor, being handed a neighbour's parcel) and choosing what to say practises the same everyday Dutch the inburgering exam and real life both ask for, without any pressure to get it 'right'.
Is it free?
Yes, all 25 stories are free with no login. Your finished stories are remembered on this device so you can see which ones you still have left.
