Free inburgering exam guides
The A2 inburgeringsexamen has five parts: Lezen, Luisteren, Schrijven, Spreken and KNM. You book, pay for and pass each part separately with DUO, usually within three years. These free inburgering guides explain the format and scoring of each part, the eight KNM themes, and the rules on money and deadlines.
Here you will find inburgering exam questions with answers, a guide to every exam part, KNM (Dutch society) topics and answers to common questions. Every guide follows the format DUO uses, so it works next to the official DUO practice exams.

Frequently asked questions
- Do you have to pass all five parts at once?
- No. You book and pass each part separately, on different dates if you want. A part you have passed stays passed while your inburgering is running. You only resit the part you did not pass.
- What level is the inburgering exam?
- It depends on which law covers you. If your inburgeringsplicht started before 1 January 2022, you pass at A2 or higher. From that date the Wet inburgering 2021 applies. Your gemeente then sets your learning route, usually the B1-route. The gemeente can scale it down to A2 after 600 hours of lessons at a certified school.
- What does the inburgering exam cost?
- DUO charges €50 for each of the five parts, so €250 in total. Under the 2013 law, ONA adds €40, for €290. You pay again for every retake. Asylum status holders under the Wet inburgering 2021 do not borrow from DUO: the gemeente pays their course and the first two attempts of each exam, as long as you do not take it below the level in your PIP. Under the 2013 law they can borrow up to €10,000. Everyone else, including family migrants, can borrow an amount that DUO sets from their income. Check what applies to you on inburgeren.nl.
- What score do you need to pass?
- The computer-scored parts have a fixed pass mark, but DUO does not publish it. Prep sources put Lezen and Luisteren near 18 of 25 (one says 19 for Lezen) and KNM at 28 of 40. Assessors rate Schrijven and Spreken against a rubric, and DUO publishes no percentage for either. Check the current rules on inburgeren.nl.
- How do you register for the inburgering exam?
- You do it yourself, through DUO. Log in to Mijn Inburgering on inburgeren.nl with your DigiD. Book each part with a date and exam location, and pay the fee. DUO then sends an oproepbrief with your date, time and location.
- Are these guides free?
