What the KNM exam tests
The KNM exam (Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij) tests your knowledge of Dutch society. KNM is one part of the inburgering exam, the Dutch civic integration exam. Most people who start their inburgering now fall under the Wet inburgering 2021.
Each part has its own result, so you can pass the exams one at a time. You book KNM through Mijn Inburgering on the DUO website.
DUO (Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs) asks about facts, rules and institutions from daily life. The questions do not ask what you personally would do.
- 40 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes, on a computer
- Each question has a photo or image, a short Dutch question and three options: A, B or C
- You pass when you answer at least 28 of the 40 questions correctly
- The questions are grouped by theme, and a short screen announces each new theme
KNM tests knowledge, not your Dutch language skills, but the questions are in simple Dutch at the level of the A2 exam. You take the same KNM exam whether you do your inburgering at A2 or at B1 level.
DUO uses eight official themes. The free KNM practice questions below give one example per theme. That makes them good exam preparation: you learn the exam format and the facts together.

Is the KNM exam a Dutch citizenship test?
The Netherlands has no separate citizenship test. To apply for Dutch citizenship (naturalisatie) you normally show your inburgering diploma, and KNM is one of its parts. That makes the questions above a fair Dutch citizenship test example. For a quick check, try the free Dutch citizenship test with twelve questions in the KNM style.
Take a full KNM practice exam (A2)
Practise a few questions every day, starting with the themes you mix up most. Then take a full KNM practice exam: 40 questions in 45 minutes, like the real one. Aim for clearly more than 28 correct before you book your exam.
