What the A2 reading exam looks like

The Lezen exam is done on a computer at a supervised DUO exam location. It has 25 multiple-choice questions and lasts 65 minutes, you may not use a dictionary, and you pass with 19 of the 25 correct.

At A2 level, the texts come from daily life, so you may read a letter from the gemeente (municipality), an e-mail from work or a note from a neighbour. You may also get a shop advert, a transport notice or a short brochure. Most texts have 2 to 4 questions, with 3 or 4 answer options each.

Each question checks one practical reading skill:

  • find one fact, such as a day, a time, a price or a place
  • understand why someone wrote the message
  • see what a person must do next
  • draw a simple conclusion from the text

Most questions start with a short line about a person, such as Sabrina krijgt een brief van haar werk. Answer from that person's situation.

Why the wrong answers look right

In the A2 reading exam, the wrong options often use real words from the text, but they simply answer a different question.

  • Example 1: kamer 3 and werkpas are in the letter, but the question asks what Sabrina must do if she cannot come.
  • Example 2: 08.40 is a real bus time, but the question is about Saturday, and line 12 does not run then.
  • Example 3: the text never says "Amir must choose another date", so you draw that conclusion from two sentences.
  • Example 4: the times 14.00, 16.00 and 15.30 are details, while the question asks for the purpose of the note.
  • Example 5: June, 25 euros and Monday are true facts, but the question asks for a place.

Common mistakes

  1. Reading the whole text first. Read the question first, so you know which fact to look for.
  2. Matching words instead of meaning. An option that copies a word from the text can still be wrong.
  3. Forgetting the person. If the question is about Halima on Saturday, the answer must fit Halima on Saturday.
  4. Leaving a question empty. A wrong answer costs nothing, so always choose an option.

Dutch reading exam practice that works

Practise with short everyday texts: letters, e-mails, notes, adverts, opening hours and timetables. Use one routine for every question: read the question, decide what you need (a time, a place, an action or a reason), then scan the text for it. When you check your answer, also ask why each wrong option is wrong, because that is how you get faster.

DUO's own practice exams (oefenexamens) for A2 Lezen are free on inburgeren.nl. They give a chance band instead of pass or fail: 17 to 22 correct is redelijke kans (a fair chance), and 23 to 25 is grote kans (a good chance).
