How B1 Schrijven is scored
Staatsexamen NT2 Schrijven (Nederlands als tweede taal) for Programma I, taalniveau B1, takes 100 minutes. You type your answers on a computer and choose the order of the tasks yourself. The Van Dale Pocketwoordenboek NT2 is the only dictionary allowed. Recent published exams had 12 tasks:
- 8 zinstaken (2 points each): short e-mails with a gap you complete in one or a few sentences.
- 4 longer tasks (8 points each): usually e-mails; in two of the last three published exams, one of them was a form. A form has no samenhang point, so it is worth 7.
Two trained assessors score every task, and content comes first. A task that gets 0 for adequaatheid/begrijpelijkheid is not scored any further. The model also says that sentences copied word for word from the task earn no points. In 2023 and 2025 the pass mark was 25 of 47 points, so you do not need perfect Dutch. You need every required element in your own words.
Four frames for the zinstaken
In the published exams, four of the eight zinstaken name a grammar target. It is always the same four constructions, and the word just before the gap tells you which one.
Reason after want (hoofdzin) Ik kan helaas niet komen, want [reden]. Ik kan helaas niet komen, want ik moet naar de tandarts.
Purpose after zodat (bijzin) Ik wil graag afspreken, zodat [doel]. Ik wil graag afspreken, zodat we de planning kunnen bespreken.
Consequence after daarom (inversion) Daarom [werkwoord] [onderwerp] [rest]. De trein had vertraging. Daarom kom ik later aan.
Question with om ... te (te + infinitive) Heb je zin om [actie]? Heb je zin om vanavond extra te oefenen?
The grammar point is not automatic. The verb must still be in the right place: zodat we kunnen de planning bespreken loses it. The other four zinstaken have no grammar target, so read the sentence after the gap as well. It often tells you what your answer must say. Our guide to Dutch word order at B1 covers these four patterns in more detail.
Frames for pictures or a table
Several longer tasks give you pictures or a table and ask for an e-mail. Usually the pictures or table do not go with your e-mail, so the reader must understand everything from your text alone. The task lists the required elements, often with a number such as minimaal twee redenen. Leave one out, and adequaatheid is capped at 2 of 3 points.
Reporting what happened We hebben eerst [activiteit 1 + voltooid deelwoord] en daarna [activiteit 2 + voltooid deelwoord]. We hebben eerst een rondvaart gemaakt en daarna in een restaurant gegeten.
Stating a preference with two reasons Mijn voorkeur gaat uit naar [optie], omdat [reden 1]. Bovendien [reden 2]. Mijn voorkeur gaat uit naar stagebedrijf A, omdat het dicht bij mijn huis is. Bovendien heb ik daar veel klantcontact.
Saying why another option is less suitable [Optie] is voor mij minder geschikt, omdat [reden]. Bedrijf B is voor mij minder geschikt, omdat ik geen avonddiensten kan werken.
Proposing two solutions Ik stel voor dat [oplossing 1]. Een andere mogelijkheid is dat [oplossing 2]. Ik stel voor dat u de bank deze week alsnog levert. Een andere mogelijkheid is dat u mijn geld terugbetaalt.
You may invent details the task does not give you. The assessors do not judge whether your content is true.
Signal words for the samenhang point
Each longer e-mail has one point for samenhang: a clear order and signal words that fit. Short connectors you can control are enough.
- Order: Eerst ... Daarna ... Tot slot ...
- Reason and result: omdat ... Daarom ...
- Contrast: maar, toch
- Adding: Bovendien, Ook
Eerst hebben we de klanten ontvangen. Daarna hebben we de presentatie gegeven.
Do not add extra sentences just to look fluent. The model says an extra part with errors counts against you, while an error-free extra part adds nothing. The lesson on B1 signal words has more connectors.
Register: Beste, Geachte or Hoi
Match the opening and closing to the reader, and keep u or je the same throughout.
- Formal: Geachte mevrouw De Vries, or Beste meneer Jansen, and close with Met vriendelijke groet,
- Informal: Hoi Lisa, and close with Groetjes,
Formal request Ik wil u vragen of [verzoek]. Ik wil u vragen of u de afspraak kunt verplaatsen.
Informal suggestion Zullen we [voorstel]? Zullen we volgende week samen extra oefenen?
Closing line Ik hoor graag [wat je wilt weten]. Ik hoor graag welke oplossing u kiest.
The zinstaken are e-mails too, but they do not need a signature.
Why a memorised sentence can score zero
A frame gives you structure. It cannot give you the reason, the purpose or the two solutions the task asks for. A polished sentence that fits any complaint tells the assessor nothing about this task.
Too empty: Ik schrijf deze e-mail omdat ik een probleem heb en ik hoop op een goede oplossing.
Usable, because the gaps force real content: Ik schrijf u omdat [exact probleem]. Ik stel voor dat [oplossing 1].
Filled in: Ik schrijf u omdat ik de verkeerde cursusinformatie heb ontvangen. Ik stel voor dat u mij de juiste documenten mailt.
Learn frames with gaps, not model answers. Fill the same frame with new content each time you practise. The official Facet practice environment has real B1 writing tasks, and our B1 writing practice has tasks in the same style. For the A2 exam, which is on paper, see A2 writing templates.
