B1-level Connectors: Formal Conjunctions and Adverbials: B1 Dutch grammar lesson

Why this matters at B1

At B1, verbindingswoorden do two jobs at the same time: they show the logic of the sentence, and they often force the word order. That matters directly in Lezen and Schrijven.

In reading texts, official Dutch uses connectors to signal contrast, condition, exception, result and addition. Many wrong answer options fail because they change exactly that relationship: they reverse cause and effect, ignore a condition, or turn an exception into a general rule.

In writing, especially in a zinstaak, one word before the gap can force the grammar you must produce. If the scaffold ends with zodat, you need a subordinate clause. If the sentence starts with Daarom, you need a main clause with inversion.

Two big patterns to recognise fast

Type of verbindingswoordTypical wordsWord order signalTypical exam use
Subordinating connectorhoewel, terwijl, mits, tenzij, zodatfinite verb goes to the end of the subordinate clausereading cohesion, formal explanation, zinstaak scaffolds
Main-clause connector / adverbialdaarom, daardoor, bovendien, echter, daarentegenconnector first, then finite verb: inversionconsequence sentences, contrast between points, formal email flow

Compare:

  • Hoewel de regeling ingewikkeld is, vragen veel werknemers de vergoeding toch aan.
  • Daarom vragen veel werknemers de vergoeding alsnog aan.

In the first sentence, hoewel starts a subordinate clause, so is goes to the end of that clause. In the second sentence, daarom is not a subordinating conjunction. It takes first position in the main clause, and the verb comes after it: Daarom vragen ...

The high-value B1 connectors

1. Contrast: not all contrast words behave the same

  • hoewel = although
  • terwijl = whereas / while
  • echter = however
  • daarentegen = by contrast / on the other hand

The first two usually build a subordinate clause. The second two usually sit in a main clause.

Compare:

  • Hoewel de cursus intensief is, schrijven veel deelnemers zich toch in.
  • Terwijl sommige collega's thuiswerken, kan Amir zich op kantoor juist beter concentreren.
  • De cursus is intensief. Veel deelnemers schrijven zich echter toch in.
  • Sommige collega's werken graag thuis. Amir werkt daarentegen liever op kantoor.

Exam danger: a student sees “contrast” and chooses any contrast word. But the sentence pattern must still fit. hoewel and terwijl do not behave like echter.

2. Condition and exception: read these very precisely

  • mits = provided that
  • tenzij = unless

These are classic B1 reading traps because one small word changes the whole rule.

  • U krijgt een vergoeding, mits u de originele bon bewaart.
  • De regeling geldt voor alle medewerkers, tenzij zij nog in hun proeftijd zitten.

A wrong option often removes the condition:

  • text: mits u zich vooraf aanmeldt
  • wrong option: “You may always participate.”

Or it flips the exception:

  • text: tenzij zij nog in hun proeftijd zitten
  • wrong option: “The regeling is especially for employees in their probation period.”

3. Result and addition: these stay in the main clause

  • daarom = therefore
  • daardoor = as a result
  • bovendien = moreover

These do not send the verb to the end. They trigger inversion when placed first.

  • Daarom vraagt de student uitstel aan.
  • Daardoor lopen de kosten verder op.
  • Bovendien biedt deze opleiding goede stageplaatsen.

This matters in B1 writing because a zinstaak may force exactly this pattern.

Compare:

  • wrong: Daarom de student vraagt uitstel aan.
  • right: Daarom vraagt de student uitstel aan.

Dutch warning you should remember

Bijzin: persoonsvorm aan het eind.

After hoewel, terwijl, mits, tenzij and zodat, look for the finite verb at the end of the clause.

Minimal contrasts:

CorrectWhy
Hoewel de afspraak laat is, komt Noor toch.subordinate clause: is at the end
Mits u op tijd betaalt, blijft de reservering geldig.subordinate clause: betaalt at the end
Daarom blijft de reservering geldig.main clause: inversion after Daarom

How this helps in Lezen

When a question asks what a text says, do not look only for familiar words. Look for the connector and ask:

  1. Is this contrast, reason, result, condition or exception?
  2. Is the answer option preserving that relationship?
  3. Is the option too broad because it drops mits or tenzij?
  4. Is the option true in one part of the text but wrong for the whole rule?

A very common B1 trap is a broad option that sounds reasonable but removes the condition.

Example:

  • text: Medewerkers mogen thuiswerken, mits zij dit vooraf met hun leidinggevende afstemmen.
  • wrong option: Medewerkers mogen thuiswerken als zij dat prettig vinden.

That wrong option sounds positive and topic-related, but it replaces an official condition with personal preference.

How this helps in Schrijven

In a B1 zinstaak, the connector is often the grammar instruction in disguise.

If the scaffold ends with zodat

You need a subordinate clause expressing purpose.

  • scaffold: Ik wil graag een afspraak maken, zodat ...
  • good continuation: ik mijn situatie rustig kan uitleggen.

If the sentence starts with Daarom

You need a main clause with inversion.

  • scaffold: De trein rijdt niet. Daarom ...
  • good continuation: kom ik vandaag iets later op mijn werk.

If the sentence contains mits or tenzij

You are probably writing a condition or exception in a more formal register.

  • Ik ga akkoord, mits de vergoeding deze maand wordt overgemaakt.
  • Ik ben beschikbaar, tenzij er alsnog een afspraak met de klant wordt ingepland.

That kind of sentence sounds appropriately B1: precise, formal, and logically controlled.

The real skill: match logic first, grammar second

Do not start by asking “Where does the verb go?” Start by asking what the sentence means.

  • If the meaning is contrast, you may need hoewel, terwijl, echter or daarentegen.
  • If the meaning is condition, you may need mits.
  • If the meaning is exception, you may need tenzij.
  • If the meaning is result, you may need daarom or daardoor.
  • If the meaning is addition, you may need bovendien.

Then check the sentence frame:

  • subordinate clause → verb at the end
  • main clause after fronted connector → inversion

That is the B1 upgrade: not just knowing connector meanings, but recognising how verbindingswoorden control both interpretation and grammar.

Key rule· 1 of 4
Subordinate connectors send the verb to the end

After Dutch connectors such as hoewel, terwijl, mits, tenzij and zodat, recognise a subordinate clause. Just like with omdat, the finite verb moves to the end of that clause.

Main-clause connectors trigger inversion

Words like daarom, daardoor, bovendien, echter and daarentegen do not create a subordinate clause. When they stand first, the finite verb comes after them.

Do not lose the logical relationship

At B1, the biggest trap is choosing a sentence that is grammatical but changes the logic. If the text says mits, the option cannot behave like a general rule; if it says tenzij, the option cannot ignore the exception.

Zinstaak scaffolds often hide the grammar target

In B1 writing, the forcing word before the gap often tells you exactly which structure is needed. zodat pushes you toward a subordinate clause of purpose; Daarom pushes you toward a main clause with inversion.
