Diminutives (-je): A2 Dutch grammar lesson
Dutch speakers add a little ending to nouns all day long. This ending is the verkleinwoord, the diminutive, and it does more than say "small".
| Base word | Diminutive |
|---|---|
| koffie | koffietje |
| moment | momentje |
| kaart | kaartje |
What the -je ending does
It does three jobs.
| Job | Example |
|---|---|
| Small size | een huis → een huisje (a little house) |
| Friendly, casual tone | Wil je een koffietje? is warmer than Wil je een koffie? |
| A single portion or item | een biertje (a beer), een kaartje (a ticket), een momentje (just a second) |
You'll hear the friendly tone constantly in shops and cafés.
The forms shift by sound
The basic ending is -je. Its exact shape changes to fit the sound before it. The common cases below cover most words you'll meet.
| Word ends in | Ending | Example |
|---|---|---|
| most consonants (t, k, p, f, s) | -je | boek → boekje |
| a long vowel or l, n, r | -tje | stoel → stoeltje |
| a short vowel + l, m, n, r (letter doubles) | -etje | bal → balletje |
| a long vowel + m | -pje | boom → boompje |
Say them out loud and the choice starts to feel natural: kopje, tafeltje, mannetje, bloempje.
Two rules that never change
A diminutive is always a het-word, even when the original noun takes de. And the plural is always -s, never -en.
| Original | Diminutive |
|---|---|
| de stoel | het stoeltje |
| de man | het mannetje |
- Wrong: de koffietje, twee koffietjeen
- Right: het koffietje, twee koffietjes
