Reflexive verbs

In Dutch, some verbs are 'reflexive'. This means the action refers back to the person doing it. You cannot simply say Ik voel ziek; you must say Ik voel me ziek (I feel [myself] sick). On the A2 exam, this is most common when reporting illness to a doctor or employer, or when filling out registration forms.

1. The Pronoun Map

Every subject pronoun has a matching reflexive partner. You must memorise these pairs perfectly for the Schrijven (Writing) exam, as a wrong pronoun counts as a grammatical error.

SubjectReflexive PronounExample
IkmeIk voel me niet goed.
Je / Jij / Uje / zichMeldt u zich hier aan?
Hij / Zij / HetzichHij wast zich.
WijonsWij vervelen ons nooit.
JulliejeWassen jullie je?
Zij (plural)zichZij melden zich aan.

2. Word Order in Main Clauses

In a standard sentence, the reflexive pronoun follows the verb immediately. If you start with a time word (Inversion), the pronoun moves to the third or fourth position, but it always stays near the subject.

  • Standard: Ik (1) voel (2) me (3) vandaag niet lekker.
  • Inversion: Vandaag (1) voel (2) ik (3) me (4) niet lekker.

3. Reflexive verbs you'll meet in the exam

You will see these verbs in KNM (civic rules) and Schrijven tasks:

  • Zich voelen (To feel): Ik voel me ziek. (Used in every ziekmelding e-mail.)
  • Zich aanmelden / inschrijven (To register): Zij schrijft zich in voor de cursus. (Used on registration forms.)
  • Zich legitimeren (To show ID): U moet zich kunnen legitimeren. (Common in KNM/Police topics).
  • Zich ziekmelden (To report sick): Ik bel de baas om me ziek te melden.

The 'Zich' Trap

Learners often use 'zich' for everyone. Remember: 'zich' is only for 'u', 'hij/zij', and 'zij (plural)'. Never use it for 'ik' or 'wij'.

Ik voel me goed.I feel good. (Not: Ik voel zich)
Wij melden ons aan.We register. (Not: Wij melden zich)
The 'U' Exception

When using 'u' (formal), you can use 'u' or 'zich' as the reflexive. In the exam, 'zich' is more common in formal letters.

U kunt zich hier inschrijven. You can register here.
Reporting Illness

In the Schrijven exam, if you forget the reflexive pronoun 'me' when telling your boss you are sick, you will lose points for grammatical correctness.

Beste meneer, ik voel me vandaag niet lekker.Dear sir, I don't feel well today.
