Indirect Speech: Reporting What Was Said or Asked: B1 Dutch grammar lesson
Why this matters at B1
At B1, indirecte rede is not a school-only grammar topic. It is a real exam skill for Lezen, Schrijven, and Spreken. Dutch texts often rapporteren what someone said, asked, explained, denied, or promised instead of giving a direct quote.
You will see patterns such as:
De opleidingsadviseur legt uit dat omscholing tijd kost, maar vaak betere kansen biedt.De medewerker vroeg of de vergoeding al was overgemaakt.De student wilde weten wanneer de lessen zouden beginnen.
If you recognise the reporting frame quickly, you can separate the source from the message. On the exam, that matters because a question may ask what a person says, thinks, asks, or means, while the passage itself uses a reporting verb plus a subordinate clause.
The core recognition rule
In indirect speech, Dutch usually uses a reporting verb followed by a bijzin.
| Trigger | Function | Word order |
|---|---|---|
dat | reported statement | finite verb at the end |
of | reported yes/no question | finite verb at the end |
waarom / wanneer / hoe / wat / wie / waar | reported open question | finite verb at the end |
So these all behave like subordinate clauses:
De docent zegt dat de toets volgende week begint.De cursist vraagt of de opleiding online is.De werknemer wil weten wanneer de vergoeding wordt uitbetaald.
The B1 shortcut is simple: after dat, of, or a question word in a reporting structure, expect the verb group near the end of the clause.
1. Reporting statements with dat
Use dat when you report what someone said, wrote, explained, promised, noticed, or believed.
Common B1 frames:
De docent zegt dat ...De manager meldt dat ...De medewerker legt uit dat ...De student schrijft dat ...De arts benadrukt dat ...
Compare direct and indirect speech:
- Direct:
De docent zegt: "De toets begint volgende week." - Indirect:
De docent zegt dat de toets volgende week begint.
The reporting verb is often not the real answer. The important information is inside the dat-clause.
Compare these two:
De begeleider zegt dat de cursus vooral geschikt is voor mensen met werkervaring.De begeleider zegt dat de cursus volgend jaar opnieuw wordt aangeboden.
Same frame, different message. In Lezen, a distractor often repeats the reporting frame correctly but changes the content inside the clause.
2. Reporting yes/no questions with of
Use of when the original question can be answered with yes or no.
-
Direct:
De cursist vraagt: "Is de opleiding online?" -
Indirect:
De cursist vraagt of de opleiding online is. -
Direct:
De werknemer vroeg: "Is de vergoeding al betaald?" -
Indirect:
De werknemer vroeg of de vergoeding al was betaald.
Here of does not mean a choice between two alternatives. In indirect speech, it means whether / if.
That matters on the exam because students sometimes misread of as ordinary or. In a reporting structure, first ask: is someone checking whether something is true? If yes, of is the likely trigger.
3. Reporting open questions with a question word
If the original question begins with waarom, wanneer, hoe, wat, wie, or waar, keep that question word in indirect speech.
-
Direct:
De student vraagt: "Wanneer begint de stage?" -
Indirect:
De student vraagt wanneer de stage begint. -
Direct:
De werknemer wilde weten: "Waarom verandert de regeling?" -
Indirect:
De werknemer wilde weten waarom de regeling verandert. -
Direct:
De deelnemer vroeg: "Hoe kan ik mij aanmelden?" -
Indirect:
De deelnemer vroeg hoe hij zich kon aanmelden.
Again, the clause after the question word is a bijzin, so the verb does not stay in question order.
4. The word-order trap: not a question anymore
This is the most useful B1 correction to make.
Direct question:
Wanneer begint de cursus?
Indirect question:
De student vraagt wanneer de cursus begint.
Wrong form:
De student vraagt wanneer begint de cursus.
Why is it wrong? Because after the reporting verb, the second part is no longer a direct question. It is a subordinate clause, so Dutch sends the finite verb to the end.
The same trap appears with of:
- Correct:
De medewerker vroeg of de afspraak al was bevestigd. - Wrong:
De medewerker vroeg of was de afspraak al bevestigd.
And with dat:
- Correct:
De docent zegt dat de toets volgende week begint. - Wrong:
De docent zegt dat de toets begint volgende week.
The problem is not style. The real problem is subordinate-clause word order.
5. Tense: backshift is common, but Dutch is practical
The curriculum pitfall here is important: when the reporting verb is in the past, a tense shift is common, but it is not automatic in every case.
Common backshift
If the reported situation belonged to that earlier moment, Dutch often shifts the tense back:
-
Hij zegt dat de cursus morgen begint. -
Hij zei dat de cursus de volgende dag begon. -
Zij vraagt of de vergoeding wordt overgemaakt. -
Zij vroeg of de vergoeding werd overgemaakt.
This is especially common when you are clearly reporting an earlier conversation from a distance.
Present tense can stay if the information is still true
Dutch may keep the present tense if the statement is still valid now:
De docent zei dat extra oefening belangrijk is.De adviseur zei dat deze regeling nog geldt.
These are natural if the speaker still believes the statement is true at the moment of reporting.
Best exam decision rule
For Lezen: do not panic about tense first. First identify the structure:
- statement →
dat - yes/no question →
of - open question → question word
Then check whether the tense expresses:
- an earlier reported situation, or
- a statement that still holds now
For Schrijven and Spreken: if you report a past question or statement, a backshift is often the safest neutral choice, but keeping present tense can also be correct when the fact still applies.
6. Where this changes your exam answer
In Lezen
You may get a question like Wat zegt de opleidingsadviseur over werknemers met lichamelijke klachten?
If the text says:
De opleidingsadviseur legt uit dat werknemers met lichamelijke klachten vaak baat hebben bij omscholing, omdat zij daardoor minder zwaar werk kunnen doen.
Then the answer must report the content correctly. A trap may keep words like lichamelijke klachten and minder zwaar werk, but reverse the relation or narrow the scope too much.
In Schrijven
You may need to summarise information from a conversation, table, or situation in a neutral tone:
Mijn begeleider zei dat ik eerst meer werkervaring moest opdoen.De docent vroeg of ik de opdracht alsnog kon inleveren.Ik wilde weten wanneer de bijeenkomst zou beginnen.
That sounds more B1-appropriate than repeating direct quotes.
In Spreken
When you explain a situation, indirect speech helps you sound organised:
Mijn leidinggevende zei dat ik het formulier opnieuw moest invullen.Ik vroeg of ik uitstel kon krijgen.Daarna wilde ik weten waarom de aanvraag was afgewezen.
7. Fast recognition checklist
When you see a long sentence, scan for these signals:
- Is there a reporting verb such as
zegt, schrijft, legt uit, vraagt, wilde weten? - Does the next clause begin with
dat,of, or a question word? - If yes, expect subordinate-clause order.
- Ignore the reporting frame for a moment and focus on the message inside the clause.
- Watch for distractors that reuse the same nouns but change the relation, reason, or condition.
8. Mini contrast set you should recognise
| Dutch pattern | What it signals |
|---|---|
Hij zegt dat de lessen morgen beginnen. | reported statement |
Hij vraagt of de lessen morgen beginnen. | reported yes/no question |
Hij vraagt wanneer de lessen beginnen. | reported open question |
The first one reports an answer or statement. The second checks whether something is true. The third asks for missing information.
That distinction is exactly what B1 tasks mean by rapporteren wat iemand zegt of vraagt.
Practice questions
