Conditional sentences with als, mits and tenzij: B1 Dutch grammar lesson
The B1 skill
At B1, conditional language is not basic if language anymore. You meet it in regelingen, voorwaarden, e-mails, advice, and longer reading texts where one small connector changes the whole meaning.
This lesson focuses on three load-bearing words:
als= if / whenmits= provided thattenzij= unless
All three can introduce a conditional clause. When that conditional clause is a bijzin, the finite verb goes to the end, just as with omdat or dat.
- Als u vandaag betaalt, ontvangt u morgen een bevestiging.
- Mits u vandaag betaalt, ontvangt u morgen een bevestiging.
- U ontvangt morgen een bevestiging, tenzij de betaling te laat binnenkomt.
The grammar point is not only word order. At B1, the real difficulty is this:
- choosing the connector that matches the logic;
- keeping the verb-final order inside the conditional clause;
- recognising the difference between a real condition and a hypothetical one.
1. als: the neutral condition
Use als for a normal condition. It is the most neutral option and works in speech and writing.
- Als ik op tijd klaar ben, kom ik vanavond nog langs.
- Als een werknemer overuren maakt, kan hij deze uren later opnemen.
- Als u vragen heeft, kunt u contact opnemen met de administratie.
Notice the pattern:
| Clause | Word order |
|---|---|
| Als u vragen heeft | verb at the end of the bijzin |
| kunt u contact opnemen | main clause with inversion after the fronted clause |
So after a fronted conditional clause, the main clause does not stay in normal subject-verb order:
- Als u vragen heeft, kunt u contact opnemen.
- Not: Als u vragen heeft, u kunt contact opnemen.
That mistake matters because B1 often tests whether you can control the whole sentence, not just the connector.
2. mits: a stricter, more formal condition
mits also expresses a condition, but it usually sounds more formal and more limited than als. You often see it in rules, official communication, or procedures.
- U komt in aanmerking voor vergoeding, mits u de originele bon bewaart.
- Mits de student aan alle voorwaarden voldoet, wordt de aanvraag verwerkt.
- De cursus gaat door, mits er voldoende deelnemers zijn.
A useful exam-day instinct: if the sentence sounds like a regel, voorwaarde, or officiële mededeling, mits is often a better fit than als.
Compare:
| Sentence | Effect |
|---|---|
| Als u de factuur bewaart, krijgt u misschien later geen problemen. | neutral condition |
| U krijgt de kosten vergoed, mits u de factuur bewaart. | formal requirement / strict condition |
Both may be grammatical, but they do not sound equally suitable in every context.
3. tenzij: the exception that blocks the result
tenzij means unless. It introduces the exception that prevents the main clause from happening.
- De afspraak gaat door, tenzij de arts onverwacht afwezig is.
- U hoeft niets te betalen, tenzij u zich te laat afmeldt.
- Tenzij het weer verslechtert, vertrekt de groep om 8.00 uur.
This connector is dangerous because many learners reverse the logic.
Look carefully:
- U hoeft niets te betalen, tenzij u zich te laat afmeldt.
This means:
- normally: you pay nothing;
- exception: if you cancel too late, that changes.
So tenzij does not add an extra normal condition. It names the blocking exception.
A quick check:
| Connector | Think of it as |
|---|---|
als | if this happens |
mits | only if this condition is met |
tenzij | except if this happens |
4. Real condition vs hypothetical condition with als
This is the part many B1 learners half-know but do not control yet.
Real / possible condition
Use a present-tense pattern when the condition is real, open, or possible.
- Als ik morgen tijd heb, kom ik naar de bijeenkomst.
- Als de opleiding nog plaatsen heeft, kan Fatima zich inschrijven.
This means the situation is still possible.
Hypothetical / unreal condition
Use past tense + zou when the condition is imaginary, unlikely, or contrary to the facts.
- Als ik morgen tijd had, zou ik naar de bijeenkomst komen.
- Als de opleiding nog plaatsen had, zou Fatima zich kunnen inschrijven.
This means: in reality, that condition is probably not true.
Here is the contrast clearly:
| Meaning | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| real / open | als + present, present / modal | Als ik tijd heb, kan ik meegaan. |
| hypothetical / unreal | als + past, zou + infinitive | Als ik tijd had, zou ik meegaan. |
Very common learner error:
- Not natural Dutch for this meaning: Als ik tijd zou hebben, zou ik meegaan.
At this level, the safer B1 pattern is:
- Als ik tijd had, zou ik meegaan.
Past hypothetical
You may also meet a past-unreal pattern in more advanced B1 reading:
- Als hij eerder had gereageerd, zou het probleem kleiner zijn geweest.
You do not need to produce this often, but you should recognise the logic: the condition was not fulfilled, and now the result is also unreal.
5. Position of the conditional clause
The conditional clause can come first or second.
Conditional clause first
- Als u het formulier vandaag verstuurt, ontvangt u volgende week bericht.
- Mits de leidinggevende akkoord gaat, kan de cursus worden vergoed.
- Tenzij er nog vragen zijn, sluiten we de vergadering af.
If the clause comes first, the main clause has inversion:
- ontvangt u
- kan de cursus worden vergoed
- sluiten we
Conditional clause second
- U ontvangt volgende week bericht als u het formulier vandaag verstuurt.
- De cursus kan worden vergoed, mits de leidinggevende akkoord gaat.
- We sluiten de vergadering af, tenzij er nog vragen zijn.
The meaning stays the same, but the punctuation and rhythm change.
6. Typical B1 traps
Trap 1: correct connector, wrong word order
- Wrong: Als u wilt bezwaar maken, u moet binnen zes weken reageren.
- Correct: Als u bezwaar wilt maken, moet u binnen zes weken reageren.
Two things changed:
wiltmoved to the end of the subordinate clause;- the main clause uses inversion: moet u.
Trap 2: mits treated as casual als
- Less suitable in official tone: Als u aan alle voorwaarden voldoet, wordt de aanvraag goedgekeurd.
- More precise: Mits u aan alle voorwaarden voldoet, wordt de aanvraag goedgekeurd.
The first sentence can still be grammatical, but the second signals a stricter formal requirement.
Trap 3: tenzij read as a normal positive condition
- Het museum is dagelijks open, tenzij er onderhoud plaatsvindt.
Do not read this as: maintenance means the museum is open. It means the opposite: maintenance is the exception.
Trap 4: real and hypothetical forms mixed
- Wrong mixed pattern: Als ik meer vrije tijd heb, zou ik vrijwilligerswerk doen.
- Better real condition: Als ik meer vrije tijd heb, doe ik vrijwilligerswerk / kan ik vrijwilligerswerk doen.
- Better hypothetical condition: Als ik meer vrije tijd had, zou ik vrijwilligerswerk doen.
7. A useful recognition habit
When you see als, mits, or tenzij, ask three fast questions:
- Is this a normal condition, a strict requirement, or an exception?
- Is the condition real/possible, or hypothetical?
- Is the verb at the end of the conditional clause, and is the main clause correct after it?
That habit helps you both read and write longer B1 sentences more accurately.
