'Er' in Official Texts: 'erover', 'ermee', 'ervan', 'erin', 'erop': B1 Dutch grammar lesson

The one rule that decides everything

Dutch does not say over het or met het. When the thing after a preposition is not a person, the pronoun becomes er and it fuses with the preposition: over de regeling becomes erover, met dat voorstel becomes ermee, van de uitslag becomes ervan.

This is everywhere in officiële Dutch — letters from the gemeente, terms and conditions, workplace e-mail — because it lets a text point back at a whole idea without naming it again.

But er and its preposition do not always stay glued together. That split is the part that costs marks, and it is the part this lesson drills.

Nothing in between: keep them together

If no other word needs the space, er + preposition stays as one word, directly before the verb at the end.

  • De directie heeft erover nagedacht. — The board has thought about it.
  • Wij hebben ermee ingestemd. — We have agreed to it.

Something in between: split them

As soon as another element belongs in the middle of the sentence — an adverb, a time phrase, a negation — er moves forward and the preposition stays back, next to the verb.

Without the extra elementWith an element in between
Wij hebben erover gesproken.Wij hebben er gisteren over gesproken.
Zij heeft erover nagedacht.Zij heeft er lang over nagedacht.
Ik ben het ermee eens.Ik ben het er niet mee eens.

That is the whole mechanism: er goes early, the preposition goes late.

A sentence like Wij hebben gesproken erover. is wrong — the preposition can never trail behind the verb at the end. If you are unsure, say the sentence without er first (Wij hebben over de regeling gesproken.) and notice that over already sits before the verb. It stays there.

The verb decides the preposition

You cannot choose the preposition freely. It comes from the fixed combination the verb (or adjective) demands, so learn the pair, not the word.

Fixed combinationWith erExample
uitgaan vanervanWij gaan ervan uit dat u de brief hebt ontvangen.
rekenen operopU kunt erop rekenen dat wij u informeren.
zorgen voorervoorWij zorgen ervoor dat uw aanvraag op tijd binnen is.
het eens zijn metermeeDe meeste bewoners zijn het ermee eens.
nadenken overeroverDe gemeente denkt erover na.
deelnemen aaneraanRuim honderd mensen namen eraan deel.
bezwaar maken tegenertegenU kunt binnen zes weken ertegen bezwaar maken.

Reading: what does er point at?

In a Lezen text, er + preposition is a cohesion signal. The answer to "what is this sentence about?" is usually one or two sentences earlier.

De gemeente heeft de regels voor het aanvragen van een vergoeding aangepast. Veel bewoners weten er nog niets van.

ervan = van de aangepaste regels. A distractor will often offer a noun that appears closer to er but is not what the preposition attaches to — check which verb governs it (weten van), then look back for the idea, not the nearest noun.

Daarover and hierover: the fronted variants

When the reference is the first thing in the sentence, Dutch uses daar- (that, further back) or hier- (this, just mentioned) instead of er. The verb then comes second, as always.

  • Daarover is in de vergadering al gesproken. → Daarover is in de vergadering al gesproken.

Use er in the middle of a sentence, daar-/hier- at the start.

Key rule· 1 of 4
er + preposition replaces a non-person

Dutch never says 'over het' or 'met dat' for a thing. The pronoun becomes 'er' and fuses with the preposition: erover, ermee, ervan, erop, eraan.

De directie heeft erover nagedacht. The board has thought about it.
Wij hebben ermee ingestemd. We have agreed to it.
Something in between splits them

An adverb, a time phrase or a negation pushes 'er' forward and leaves the preposition at the back, next to the verb. This split is the single most common error at B1.

Wij hebben er gisteren over gesproken. We talked about it yesterday.
Ik ben het er niet mee eens.I do not agree with it.
The preposition comes from the verb

You cannot pick the preposition by meaning. It is fixed by the combination: uitgaan van gives ervan, rekenen op gives erop, zorgen voor gives ervoor. Learn the pair.

Wij gaan ervan uit dat u de brief hebt ontvangen. We assume you have received the letter.
U kunt erop rekenen dat wij u informeren. You can count on us informing you.
At the start of a sentence: daar- or hier-

When the reference is fronted, 'er' is not used. 'Daarover' points further back, 'hiervoor' to what was just said, and the finite verb comes second.

Daarover is in de vergadering al gesproken. That has already been discussed in the meeting.
