A 30-day study plan for the A2 inburgering exam

Start with a practice exam per part to see where you stand, then book each part separately through Mijn Inburgering: the five exams are sat independently, so you stage them one at a time. Practise in the real exam format with DUO's official practice exams, and plan around the result wait: DUO sends it by letter within 8 weeks.

DUO exam queues can stretch past six weeks, meaning a compressed 30-day preparation schedule requires locking in test slots before opening a textbook. This inburgering study plan breaks down your daily priorities across all five components so you do not waste study time or forfeit exam fees. You will learn how to sequence your preparation, master the testing software, and navigate official DUO regulations.

Day 1: measure where you stand per part and book the exams

Booking your exam seats through Mijn Inburgering (My Integration) must happen on day one because examination centres fill up weeks in advance. DUO notes that it can take more than six weeks before you can sit an exam, and all A2 exams are held at its six locations: Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Rijswijk, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Zwolle. If you wait until you feel fully prepared before reserving a seat, you risk missing your statutory integration deadline (inburgeringstermijn). You log into the DUO portal with your DigiD, check which specific components appear on your personal dashboard, select your exam dates, and complete the booking fees directly.

Once your dates are booked, determine your actual baseline across the components rather than guessing where to direct your energy. Take thirty minutes to review a sample reading paper and speak two practice sentences out loud to hear your delivery. Most candidates quickly discover that their passive language skills run well ahead of their active output.

Be honest about your starting level.

This immediate diagnostic separates candidates into two groups. It identifies candidates who need extensive vocabulary building from those who merely need to adapt their existing Dutch to DUO test parameters. EU, EEA and Swiss nationals have no civic integration obligation at all, and people in the Netherlands for a temporary purpose, such as a kennismigrant (knowledge migrant), are exempt while they hold that permit; for them this schedule only matters if they integrate voluntarily, for example ahead of naturalisation or a stronger residence permit. For mandatory candidates under the Wet inburgering (Civic Integration Act), failing to finish within three years leads to strict enforcement, including fines up to €1,000 under the 2021 rules or €1,250 under the 2013 rules. Use DUO's exam booking portal on day one to guarantee that your test dates match your 30-day timeline.

Week 1: learn the format of the five parts before you practise

Before memorising vocabulary or doing grammar exercises, study how DUO tests each of the five exam components. The five distinct subjects are Lezen (reading), Luisteren (listening), Schrijven (writing), Spreken (speaking), and Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij (KNM, knowledge of Dutch society). Candidates often fail not from a lack of language ability, but because the digital exam interface surprises them on test day. The language components test everyday A2 proficiency.

Spend your first seven days breaking down the technical requirements for each individual test:

  • Lezen: scanning short everyday items such as letters from the gemeente (municipality), workplace memos, or bus timetable alterations.
  • Luisteren: listening to realistic dialogues on a computer headset, focusing on specific details like dates, appointment hours, or pharmacy instructions.
  • Schrijven: the one part done with pen and paper: filling in a form, writing short messages and a short text, where word order in main and subordinate clauses matters.
  • Spreken: answering spoken prompts into a microphone while a timer runs on the computer screen.

Understanding the interface prevents panic.

Pay close attention to KNM during this first week. This component tests practical knowledge of how Dutch society works across eight themes, from work, housing and health care to history and the rechtsstaat. Expect questions on everyday situations such as contacting a huisarts (GP), dealing with a zorgverzekeraar (health insurer), or your rights and duties at work. Remember that extra-time concessions introduced for speaking exams apply strictly to the B1 level, not to A2 candidates. Review the official overview on DUO's exam overview to confirm how each component functions before you sit down for practical drills.

Weeks 2 and 3: practise part by part, with DUO's official practice exams

Dedicate the middle fourteen days to intense, isolated practice on one component at a time rather than mixing subjects every afternoon. Alternate your schedule between receptive and productive skills to prevent study fatigue: tackle Lezen on Monday, Schrijven on Tuesday, Luisteren on Wednesday, Spreken on Thursday, and KNM on Friday. Weekends belong to revision and targeted vocabulary expansion. Work through the digital sample tasks on a desktop computer, as DUO advises. Lezen, Luisteren, Spreken and KNM are taken on a computer at a DUO exam location; A2 Schrijven is written by hand, so print DUO's writing PDFs and practise on paper.

When working through reading and listening, train yourself to search for concrete facts rather than attempting to translate full texts. Identify numbers, negative words like niet (not) and geen (none), and time indicators. For the writing section, keep your sentences short and grammatically stable. Write simple sentences that place the finite verb in the correct position instead of attempting complex compound phrasing. In Dutch main clauses, the conjugated verb sits in second position, while in subordinate clauses starting with omdat (because) or als (if), it shifts to the end.

Target your weaknesses early.

For the speaking test, practise speaking aloud into a recording tool so you can review your own audio. Speak clearly and answer the prompt directly without pausing for perfect vocabulary. You can inspect your performance using DUO's official practice exams, which demonstrate the exact layout and question cadence used across test centres. DUO's practice page also points to netinnederland.nl for videos, oefenen.nl for lessons, and lezenenschrijven.nl, hetbegintmettaal.nl and the public library (openbare bibliotheek) if you want help.

Week 4: timed mock exams, the exam-day rules and what to drop

The final week requires full-length practice under exact exam constraints alongside a clear understanding of test-centre security rules. Complete at least one timed mock session per component without pausing, checking a dictionary, or consulting notes. If you still encounter unfamiliar words at this stage, train yourself to deduce meaning from context rather than stopping. Stop cramming complex grammar rules that you have not mastered yet. Focus entirely on protecting points by keeping sentences simple, clear, and on topic.

DUO enforces strict operational policies across all six testing centres:

  • You must arrive completely alone, as family members, partners, and children are barred from the waiting lobby.
  • You must present a valid, undamaged identity document (geldig legitimatiebewijs), such as a passport or Dutch residence permit (verblijfsdocument).
  • You must sign a confidentiality declaration promising never to photograph, copy, or share exam materials with others.
  • You must bring your own cup if you want to drink during the exam.

Rules are enforced strictly.

If you turn up with an expired or damaged identity document, you may not sit the exam and have to register again. Double-check your travel itinerary and confirm the location details via DUO's official exam centres page before the test day. If an unexpected emergency arises, remember that DUO allows candidates to cancel or reschedule an exam without financial penalty up to seven days before the test date.

After day 30: the result, resits and protecting your free attempts

DUO sends the result of each A2 exam by letter within eight weeks, and it also appears in your Mijn Inburgering account. Reading, listening and KNM are multiple choice and scored automatically; speaking and writing are marked by examiners. Once you pass all required parts, DUO issues your diploma. As of 1 January 2026, DUO delivers the official diploma as a verified digital PDF download inside Mijn Inburgering. The IND accepts this digital credential directly for permanent residency and citizenship applications, eliminating the eight-week postal wait for paper documents unless you specifically request a hard copy.

If you fail an individual component, you only retake that specific part. You never need to sit the entire battery of exams again. However, retakes require an additional exam fee for every attempt. Managing these retakes differs depending on your legal integration pathway:

  • Asylum status holders under the 2021 Act receive two attempts per component funded directly by the gemeente.
  • Family migrants (gezinsmigranten) and non-asylum newcomers pay for every attempt themselves or finance them through an income-based DUO loan.

Protect your finances carefully.

For self-funding candidates and family migrants, every failed attempt increases overall integration costs and delays settlement goals. If you hold funded attempts, do not sit an exam unprepared and use one of them up. Monitor your remaining three-year deadline on the official inburgeren portal to ensure that any required resits are completed well before statutory penalties apply. Preparing with a structured monthly roadmap ensures you pass each component on the first attempt and protect your integration budget.

Frequently asked questions
Can I reschedule my A2 inburgering exam if I am not ready?

Yes, DUO allows you to reschedule or cancel your A2 exam through Mijn Inburgering without forfeiting your exam fee. However, you must submit the change at least 7 days before your scheduled exam date. If you change your booking within that final 7-day window, you forfeit the payment and must pay again.

How long do I have to complete the civic integration process?

The standard integration period (inburgeringstermijn) is three years from the date DUO officially notifies you of your obligation. Missing this deadline without an approved extension can result in fines of up to €1,000 under the 2021 Act or €1,250 under the 2013 Act, and it blocks access to permanent residency.

Do I have to retake all exams if I fail one component?

No, you only retake the specific component that you did not pass. Your passes for the other sections remain valid in Mijn Inburgering. You will, however, need to pay the individual exam fee again for each retake you register.

How do I receive my inburgering diploma after completing all exams?

Since 1 January 2026, DUO issues the integration diploma as a verified digital PDF accessible directly in Mijn Inburgering. The IND accepts this digital version for naturalisation and permanent residence applications. You can still order a physical paper diploma, but delivery takes around eight weeks.
