What MijnOverheid is
MijnOverheid (often searched as "Mijn Overheid") is the Dutch government's personal portal. It does two things. It shows the data that government organisations hold about you, and it holds the Berichtenbox, your mailbox for digital post from the government.
The data part covers your personal details (persoonlijke gegevens) from the Basisregistratie Personen (BRP), your vehicles at the RDW, your home at the Kadaster, and information about work, income, your AOW pension and study. If something is wrong, MijnOverheid cannot change it, because each detail comes from a different organisation. You report the error to that organisation, or through the Meldpunt Fouten in Overheidsregistraties.
The government creates your MijnOverheid account automatically once you are 14 or older, and you cannot close it. It stays empty until you activate it yourself.
MijnOverheid login: activating your account with DigiD
The MijnOverheid login is your personal DigiD. Your first login activates the account, and nobody else may log in for you, not even a partner. If you need help with digital services, you can authorise someone through DigiD Machtigen instead.
No DigiD yet? You apply for it at digid.nl with your BSN, and the activation code arrives by post at your registered address. Our DigiD guide walks through it.
DigiD itself is not compulsory. Without it, though, you cannot use MijnOverheid or read digital post from the Belastingdienst. If you do not want to work online, ask the organisation for another route, such as a phone call or a desk appointment at the gemeente.
The Berichtenbox: your digital post
The Berichtenbox is where connected organisations send official letters instead of posting them. Typical examples are the Belastingdienst about your tax return, the SVB about child benefit, the gemeente when your passport is about to expire, and the RDW when your car is due for its APK.
Two conditions must both be true before a letter arrives there:
- the organisation is connected to MijnOverheid, and
- you have not switched that organisation to paper post.
Treat a message in the Berichtenbox exactly like a letter on your doormat. It can start a deadline, ask you to send something, or confirm a decision. The free Berichtenbox app lets you read your digitale post on a phone or tablet, and you log in to it with DigiD as well.
Notifications, paper post and the Belastingdienst
Turn on the e-mail notification in your MijnOverheid settings and check that your e-mailadres there is current. When a nieuw bericht arrives, you then get an e-mail. That e-mail is only an alert, so log in to read the letter itself.
You can choose paper post again for one or more organisations. Their letters then arrive by post. The Belastingdienst is the exception, because it sends some tax letters only digitally and the government does not let you switch it back to paper. MijnOverheid now also lets you tell the Belastingdienst that you want its post digitally wherever possible.
So even if you prefer paper, keep your DigiD working and look in the Berichtenbox now and then.
DUO and inburgering letters are separate
Do not expect your inburgering post in the Berichtenbox. DUO keeps your status, exam bookings and deadlines in Mijn Inburgering, which you open from inburgeren.nl, again with DigiD. A good routine is to check three places: your doormat, the Berichtenbox and Mijn Inburgering.
Staying safe: phishing and fake login pages
Fraudsters copy government e-mails to steal DigiD details. The government's main advice:
- never log in through a link in an e-mail or text message; type mijn.overheid.nl yourself
- use the DigiD app or SMS check, so a password alone is not enough
- never give your login details to someone who calls you, even if they say they are from a bank or the government
- do not post photos of your passport, ID card or driving licence online
If you need a copy of your ID, the KopieID app lets you cross out your BSN and photo. More advice is on the government's page about preventing identity fraud.
What the KNM exam asks about this
KNM can ask what MijnOverheid is for, why you need DigiD, and where official post arrives, as well as how to stay safe online. DUO's official practice exams show the question style.
