How writing is actually marked

B1 budgets its criteria across the whole paper rather than per task, and the twelve tasks are not marked alike: the eight sentence tasks are worth 2 points each, the four longer ones up to 8. Adequaatheid still gates everything.
The gate
Indien 0 punten toegekend worden voor adequaatheid/begrijpelijkheid, wordt er niet verder beoordeeld.
Same rule as A2, same consequence. On the longer tasks there is a second ceiling worth knowing: meeting only part of what the task asked caps adequaatheid at 2 out of 3.

Worth knowing
- The scales are applied independently. A strong score on one criterion may not compensate for a weak one on another.
- Sentences copied verbatim out of the assignment earn nothing.
- Word-gender errors (de/het and what follows from them) are tolerated. A missing article is not.
- Adding a redundant extra sentence full of errors counts against you; an error-free redundant addition has no effect.
- Misreading the stimulus caps adequaatheid at 2 on a korte schrijftaak.
- Two trained assessors mark every paper independently. If their totals differ by three points or more a third is brought in, and the two closest scores are used.
Common questions
How is the B1 writing paper scored overall?
Out of 47 raw points: 8 sentence tasks at 2 points, one form at 7, and three longer messages at 8. Those raw points convert to a scaled score, and you pass at 500. The raw cut moves between sittings, with 25 of 47 the most recently published cesuur.
Why is the maximum 47 and not 48?
Because samenhang is not applied to the form task. Four criteria instead of five makes that task 7 points rather than 8.
Do the sentence tasks test specific grammar?
Yes. Several name the construction they want: a main clause, a subordinate clause with verb-final order, inversion, or te plus infinitive. Producing a correct sentence that is not the construction asked for costs you the adequaatheid point.
