How long until you get your inburgering exam result?

You want to know when DUO shows your score and what to do next if the wait feels stressful. This guide explains the inburgering exam result time, where to check your result, and what happens if you did not pass.

When the result arrives

DUO publishes your result after your exam, but the exact waiting time is not given in the official logistics spec here. The safest step is to keep checking your DUO account instead of relying on a fixed number of days.

If you're waiting for one exam part, remember that each part is handled separately. Your full inburgering process only moves forward as you pass each required part.

If the delay makes you nervous because of your legal deadline, focus on the deadline itself. Under the Wet inburgering 2021, most people have 3 years to pass, and if you miss that without a valid verlengingsgrond (official extension reason), DUO can give a fine of up to €1,250 and extend your obligation.

If one of the recognised extension reasons applies to you, contact DUO or your gemeente (municipality). The current list in this spec includes childcare shortage, PIP determination while still in COA housing, working at least 32 hours a week for at least 6 months, and the birth of a child.

Where you see the result

You check your exam status and results through DUO in Mijn Inburgering. That is the main place to look for updates.

After you pass the required exams and get your diploma, the default diploma format from 1 January 2026 is digital. You can download the PDF in Mijn Inburgering / Mijn diploma's.

The IND accepts this digital PDF for naturalisation-related submissions. If you still want paper, you can request a paper copy from DUO, but paper delivery takes about 8 weeks.

What if you did not pass

If you did not pass, you can retake that exam part, but DUO charges the exam fee again for each retake. That means every failed part costs you both time and money.

If you use the DUO loan, the long-term effect depends on your route. Asylum status holders can have the loan forgiven if they pass within the legal deadline, while family and other migrants must repay the loan in full over time with interest.

A failed result does not automatically mean you will miss your deadline. It does mean you should plan your next attempt early, because your inburgeringstermijn keeps running unless DUO accepts a valid extension reason.

This is where steady practice helps. InburgeringPrep lets you train the exam parts again and again, so you can reduce retakes and go into the next DUO exam with a clearer plan.

Frequently asked questions
Does DUO send the inburgering result by post?
This spec only confirms that you can see your status and results in *Mijn Inburgering*. It does not say that DUO sends exam results by post, so the safest place to check is your online DUO account.
Can I use my digital diploma for the IND?
Yes. From 1 January 2026, DUO's default diploma is a digital PDF in *Mijn Inburgering / Mijn diploma's*, and the IND accepts that PDF for naturalisation-related submissions.
Do I pay again if I fail one exam part?
Yes. DUO charges a fee for each exam part, and you pay that fee again every time you retake a part. That is why reducing retakes can save you money.
Will one failed exam part give me a fine from DUO?
No, a failed part by itself is not the same as a fine. The fine risk is tied to missing your legal inburgering deadline without a valid *verlengingsgrond*, and DUO can then impose a fine of up to €1,250.
